Berman Health Club

At Berman Health Club, we are always searching for technologies that help our patients move better, feel better, and flourish in the second half of life. One of the newest additions to our office is our Sunlighten infrared sauna, which combines red light therapy with near infrared, mid infrared, and far infrared technology.

This is not your typical sauna.

Traditional saunas simply heat the air around you. Our Sunlighten sauna uses multiple therapeutic wavelengths of light that penetrate the body at different depths. The result is a personalized experience that can support pain relief, recovery, metabolism, stress reduction, sleep, and overall wellness.

Even better, the temperature is fully adjustable. Many people avoid saunas because they dislike extreme heat. Our sauna allows individuals to choose lower temperatures while still receiving the therapeutic benefits of infrared and red light therapy.

Understanding the Different Wavelengths

Each wavelength serves a unique purpose within the body.

Red Light Therapy

Red light therapy uses visible red wavelengths that primarily affect the skin, superficial tissues, and the mitochondria inside our cells.

Research suggests red light therapy may help:

  • Support cellular energy production (ATP)
  • Promote skin health and collagen production
  • Improve circulation
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Support wound healing
  • Enhance recovery after exercise
  • Reduce joint discomfort
  • Promote healthy aging

Red light therapy works by stimulating the mitochondria, often called the “powerhouses” of the cells. When mitochondria function more efficiently, cells may produce more energy, which can support healing and recovery throughout the body.

Many patients also appreciate the potential cosmetic benefits, including healthier skin tone, improved skin texture, and support for collagen production.

Near Infrared (NIR)

Near infrared penetrates slightly deeper than red light and reaches muscles, blood vessels, and tissues below the skin.

Potential benefits include:

  • Cellular repair and regeneration
  • Improved circulation
  • Enhanced tissue healing
  • Immune support
  • Reduced inflammation
  • Increased mitochondrial function
  • Support for nerve health

Near infrared is commonly used to support recovery and healing at the cellular level.

Mid Infrared (MIR)

Mid infrared penetrates deeper into muscles and soft tissues.

Benefits may include:

  • Increased blood flow
  • Muscle relaxation
  • Improved recovery after exercise
  • Reduced muscle tension
  • Enhanced flexibility
  • Relief of soreness and stiffness

Patients with neck pain, back pain, generalized muscle aches, and chronic tension frequently find this wavelength particularly beneficial.

Far Infrared (FIR)

Far infrared penetrates deepest and creates the warming effect many people associate with infrared saunas.

Research has demonstrated potential benefits including:

  • Increased circulation
  • Enhanced sweating
  • Cardiovascular support
  • Relaxation of blood vessels
  • Reduced inflammation
  • Improved recovery
  • Stress reduction
  • Support for metabolic health

Far infrared also promotes the deep, comfortable warmth that many patients find incredibly relaxing.

Personalized Programs Based on Your Goals

One of the unique features of our Sunlighten sauna is its ability to automatically adjust the combination of red light and infrared wavelengths based on your goals.

Programs include:

  • Pain relief
  • Inflammation reduction
  • Weight management
  • Metabolic support
  • Detoxification
  • Relaxation
  • Recovery
  • Stress reduction

Rather than delivering the same treatment every session, the sauna adjusts the wavelengths to support your desired outcome.

Conditions That May Benefit

Infrared and red light therapy are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease. However, many patients report meaningful improvements when these therapies are used alongside appropriate medical care and healthy lifestyle changes.

Autoimmune Conditions

Patients with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, and Crohn’s disease often struggle with inflammation, fatigue, pain, and poor recovery.

Red and infrared light therapies may help support:

  • Reduced inflammatory burden
  • Improved circulation
  • Better recovery
  • Reduced joint discomfort
  • Enhanced energy production
  • Improved sleep quality

Women’s Health

Women dealing with endometriosis, PCOS, infertility, and hormonal imbalances often experience inflammation, pain, insulin resistance, and elevated stress hormones.

These therapies may support:

  • Reduced inflammation
  • Improved circulation
  • Better recovery
  • Relaxation of the nervous system
  • Metabolic support
  • Improved sleep quality

Pain Conditions

Patients frequently seek care for:

  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Arthritis
  • Generalized joint pain
  • Muscle tension
  • Exercise recovery

Red light therapy combined with mid and far infrared wavelengths may help improve circulation, reduce stiffness, and support tissue healing.

Overactive Bladder and Pelvic Health

Chronic inflammation, muscle tension, and nervous system dysregulation may contribute to pelvic symptoms and overactive bladder.

The relaxation response created by infrared therapy, combined with improved circulation, may help support pelvic health and overall recovery.

Stress, Sleep, and Cortisol

Many individuals live in a constant state of stress. Elevated cortisol levels can contribute to poor sleep, weight gain, fatigue, and hormone imbalances.

Infrared and red light therapies promote activation of the parasympathetic nervous system—the body’s “rest and recover” state—which may help:

  • Improve sleep quality
  • Reduce perceived stress
  • Support healthy cortisol patterns
  • Promote relaxation
  • Improve recovery

Metabolism and Insulin Resistance

Patients with insulin resistance and metabolic dysfunction often struggle with fatigue, inflammation, elevated blood sugar, and difficulty losing weight.

The sauna’s metabolism and weight management programs may support:

  • Improved circulation
  • Stress reduction
  • Recovery after exercise
  • Relaxation
  • Healthy metabolic function

These therapies work best when combined with proper nutrition, exercise, sleep, and individualized medical care.
