October is here, which means we’re heading into what most people call “sick season.”
But at Berman Health Club, I like to call this time of year something else:
Sugar Season.
Think about what’s coming over the next four months.
First comes the candy holiday — Halloween.
Then the pie holiday — Thanksgiving.
Next comes the cookie holiday — December.
And finally, we’ll celebrate the booze holiday — New Year’s Eve.
At almost exactly the same time, we start hearing about more colds, flu, COVID, sinus infections, fatigue, poor sleep, and people generally feeling run down.
Is increased exposure to viruses part of the reason? Of course.
But that’s not the entire story.
What’s Happening Inside Your Body?
October is often when our normal routines begin to change.
There’s more candy around. Holiday events begin. Then come desserts, alcohol, travel, and restaurant meals. Exercise becomes less consistent. Bedtimes get later. Stress increases. Water intake often decreases.
And it doesn’t happen overnight.
One Halloween party isn’t the problem. It’s what happens when Halloween turns into Thanksgiving, which turns into December, which turns into “I’ll start again in January.”
Higher amounts of sugar and refined carbohydrates can create larger fluctuations in blood sugar. Poor blood sugar regulation can affect energy, hunger, cravings, and sleep. Add increased alcohol, stress, decreased exercise, and inadequate sleep, and suddenly the body isn’t operating with the same resilience it had a few months ago.
This is why October is NOT the month to stop paying attention to your health.
It’s when I want you paying more attention.
Build Resilience Before You Need It
You don’t need a perfect meal plan through the holidays.
You need consistency with the fundamentals.
Start with protein. Make sure you’re eating adequate protein throughout the day.
Be intentional with your carbohydrates instead of allowing sweets and snacks to creep into every part of the day.
Eat your cooked vegetables and fiber. Drink your water. Continue strength training. Walk. Protect your sleep.
And yes—you can eat the Halloween candy.
Have the Thanksgiving pie.
Enjoy a glass of wine.
We aren’t taking away your wine. 😊
The goal isn’t avoiding every celebration. The goal is creating a body that’s metabolically resilient enough to handle occasional celebrations without allowing them to become your everyday routine.
Don’t Forget What’s Happening Beneath the Surface
October is also a great time to revisit your labs and supplement regimen.
Do you actually know your Vitamin D level?
What about your Vitamin B12, folate, or Magnesium RBC?
How is your blood sugar?
What is your fasting insulin?
These are some of the markers we pay attention to at Berman Health Club because nutrition, metabolic health, sleep, movement, stress, and nutrient status all play important roles in how we feel and function.
Simply being told your labs are “normal” doesn’t necessarily answer the question:
Are they optimal for YOU and the way you want to feel?
Don’t Wait for January
Every January, the world suddenly decides it’s time to get healthy.
But why spend the next three months moving backward just so you can spend January trying to recover what you lost?
Enjoy Halloween. Celebrate Thanksgiving. Spend time with your family. Have foods you love.
Health isn’t about restriction. It’s about understanding your body well enough to know how to create balance.
And that’s exactly where we can help.
At Berman Health Club, our job isn’t to hand you another list of foods you can’t eat or tell you that you need to be perfect. We help you better understand your body, your labs, your nutrition, your movement, and the habits that are actually influencing how you feel.
We give you the support, guidance, and knowledge to make healthier choices while still living your life.
Because when you understand what YOUR body needs, balance becomes a lot easier.
Don’t wait until January to ask for help. Get on our schedule now and let us help you navigate the next three months while continuing to move toward your goals.
